A lost vial of Ted Bundy’s blood was recently found at the Tallahassee Crime Lab, the blood was collected in 1978 when Bundy was taken into custody for the murder of a 12-year old local girl. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be adding the DNA for the serial killer into the national FBI database and will possibly be closing many cold case murders.

bundywanted 20 Years Later Serial Killer Ted Bundy’s DNA Added to FBI Database, May Close Unsolved MurdersTed Bundy is one of the most infamous serial killers in America’s history. Bundy went on an abduction, rape, torture, and murder rampage across five states in the 1970s. The serial killer is also an admitted necrophiliac and known sociopath.

Bundy was sentenced to the death penalty and got the electric chair in 1989 before the advent of DNA evidence in forensic science. After his hair and a bite marks on a victim’s buttock were matched to evidence found at crime scenes, Bundy was finally caught and convicted.

Though he was only convicted on three murders, he later confessed to murdering over 20 more girls before his execution. Many girls were left unidentified but Bundy did admit to many crimes where the police had him as the lead suspect.

During his incarceration and his wait on death row, he spoke closely with FBI Special Agent, William Hagmaier. He explained to Agent Hagmaier that his early murders were more impulsive and that he truly became a predator around the time of Lynda Healy’s murder in 1974.Though he never admitted to murders before 1974, that statement implies that he did kill before. This new DNA evidence can open the doors to many other undocumented murders by Bundy.

Published estimates of how many homicides Bundy actually committed go as high as 100 or more. In an interview with biographer Hugh Aynesworth that for every publicized murder, of which there were 30, there “could be one that was not.” This implies yet again that there are many other murders that he did not admit to.

Since his DNA was put in the FBI database, there is already a cold case that is being reopened. The murder of Ann Marie Burr, an 8-year old girl in Tacoma, Washington where Bundy spent his adolescent years. If Bundy’s new DNA evidence connects him to this murder, this will make Burr his first documented victim.

Do you think that if DNA profiling had been prevalent during Bundy’s murder spree, things would have been different?

In Rome an independent expert panel appointed by the court found that the DNA forensic evidence convicting Amanda Knox and her then boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, was contaminated.

Amanda Knox Innocent 300x222 Hope Rises for Amanda Knox Freedom: DNA on Knife and Bra Determined UnreliableRecent breakthroughs in the DNA evidence that closed the case on the Amanda Knox murder trial in Italy has the Knox defense team and family confident she will be released and home by Christmas. The lack of motive and witnesses make this case highly reliant on the forensic evidence collected by Italian officials. Now that the evidence has been found unreliable the previous verdict will most likely be overturned.

The media frenzy that ensued after the murder of Meredith Kercher in 2007 subsided once the three main suspects, Amanda Knox, Raffele Sollecito and Rudy Guede were all found guilty and convicted of killing the English student. Since their conviction, Sollecito and Knox have both filed appeals claiming their innocence.

The murder that happened in Perugia while Knox and Kercher were studying abroad and sharing a flat with three other girls has made a serious turn. Knox and Sollecito have finally caught a crucial victory in their mission to prove their innocence.

The initial DNA testing of this evidence has been found by an independent panel to be below international standards. The independent panel comprised of two professors from Rome created a report that will undoubtedly cause the Perugia Italian Court to throw out the evidence.

The report finds that evidence was improperly collected and documented, and that some pieces of evidence had no traces of real DNA from either of the two defendants. A translation of the report from the expert panel states:

The murder weapon found to have contaminated DNA evidence

Knife, more:

  1. There was no blood on the knife.
  2. and 4 Accepted scientific procedures for collecting and analyzing the knife specimen were not followed.
  3. The experts do not agree with the prosecution witnesses’ interpretations of the results since the profile was unreliable.
  4. Contamination cannot be ruled out

Bra clasp:
Partially unrecognizable because of corrosion

  1. There is no evidence of flaking cells, no cytology
  2. The interpretation of the DNA profile was erroneous
  3. The Y (sex) chromosome was misinterpreted
  4. Methods did not follow international procedures of inspection and international protocols for collecting and sampling of the exhibit.
  5. Contamination cannot be excluded.

Hopefully this new DNA report from the independent panel will lead to a quick release of both Knox and Sollecito. Guede stands by his testimony and will continue to serve his 16 year sentence.

Most people know by now that DNA is a factor that can make a case or break it. Since Casey Anthony was indicted in 2008 for murdering her 2-year old daughter Caylee Anthony, DNA has been a major factor for both the defense and the prosecution. The prosecution recently brought up a paternity test, claiming incest between Casey and the men in her family. The prosecution seems to be scrambling since the latest evidence from the FBI is that the duct tape found on the body of Caylee Anthony has no evidence of blood or DNA from the defendant and mother of the child, Casey Anthony.

Two participants in the trial, Judge Perry and Prosecutor Jeff Ashton were both involved in the first use of DNA in an American court years ago. This case will obviously lean towards the favor of scientific and DNA evidence.

An FBI forensic document examiner, Lorie Gottesman, testified that she found no evidence of DNA or blood in the evidence that she examined. She did find a trace of DNA but it turned out to be her own. Gerardo Bloise, an Orange County crime scene investigator, and Heather Seubert, a chief agent at the FBI lab also testified that they found no blood or DNA but that this does not immediately implicate innocence.

Assistant State Attorney Jeff Ashton reminded the jury while questioning Seubert that it is not uncommon for there to be a lack of blood evidence in murder cases where the cause of death didn’t involve bloodshed.

“The likelihood of obtaining a DNA result does start to diminish as the body starts to decompose,” she said.

Lee Anthony and George Anthony – Who is Caylee’s Father?

The defense also brought up the paternity test conducted to test the suspicions of one FBI agent regarding incest and the actual father of Caylee Anthony. A heated set of objections were made by the prosecution against this line of questioning.

Why did they bring up the paternity? Casey’s attorney, Baez, is trying to support his claim that his client was a victim of child abuse. And that it was this sexual abuse that caused Casey Anthony to become the instinctive liar she is today.cindy george anthony 300x234 DNA and Blood NOT Found: The Latest on Casey Anthony Trial

The defense stated that this as not appropriate because Baez is aware that the test proved that neither of the Anthony men father Casey’s child.

Death Penalty

This is a capital punishment case and if convicted Casey Anthony will be put to death. The case itself has garnered massive media coverage, especially in the state of California. More recently, a fight broke out in the court room cause an early adjournment. And everyday people are camped outside the courthouse picketing, selling shirts and hoping to catch a glimpse of the action.

Do you think that Casey Anthony killed her daughter? Or do you think the defense is telling the truth when they claim that it was actually George Anthony, Casey’s father, who found Caylee drowned in the pool and then disposed of the body?
