In Jodhpur, India there has been recent ruckus over who the true parents are of the baby boy and baby girl who were mistakenly swapped at the hospital. After the maternity ward mixed up the newborns, they left two families claiming a son and denying a daughter.

Poonam Kanwar and Chain Singh were given a son while Reshmi Devi and Sagar Ram were given who they thought was their daughter. Once the hospital staff realized their mistake, it was too late. Poonam Kanwar and Chain Singh refused to accept that they had birthed a girl and not a boy.

Both babies were born on March 25, for almost two weeks the unwanted baby girl has been left to the care of the hospital.

Chain Singh, supposed father of the girl, explained to the Times of India that he is not ashamed of having a girl, “It’s not a matter of her being a girl. I just want to confirm that she is my daughter,” Singh said.

Singh and Kanwar rejected the blood test that showed the girl was theirs and requested a DNA test to confirm this was actually a mistake.

A DNA test confirmed today April 5 that the baby is in fact Poonam’s baby. A maternity DNA test was conducted to prove the parentage of the abandoned girl.

There are a number of other DNA tests like DNA paternity testing, grandparentage DNA testing and aunt/uncle DNA testing. Why is DNA so reliable when testing for parentage or family lineage?

Because all DNA is made up of chromosomes from our parents, whose genes are also passed down from their parents – it is a reliable way to match up specific DNA sequences to family.

If you ever need to do a DNA test, make sure that the test you are using is accredited by the AABB for Parentage Testing and the tests guarantee their DNA results.
