Akon has stepped up to claim paternity of at least two of the children he had out of wedlock. DNA tests prove he is the father thusly granting those two children, child support, inheritance rights and Akon’s last name. Akon in return gets to have a say in the major decisions of their upbringing. With joint custody he can say what schools the children can go to and what religion they are raised in. Furthermore, he requested that his massive salary be taken into consideration when determining child support for his sons.

Akon has been father to the two boys since they were born, so the legal paternity claimis just to make sure it is just that, legal. This is a very smart thing to do, especially when no one knows what may or may not happen in the future. It would be wonderful to be able to assume that a parent would continue to be supportive in all ways without having these tests done and legalized, but for the protection of both sides and most of all the children, it is a necessity these days.Akon already has six children with three other women. It is an admirable twist that Akon filed the paternity papers and is stepping up to the plate as far as his children are concerned. It is nice to know that there are stars out there that do not just, “hit it and quit it”.

Akon’s sons were born in 2008 and in 2009. Because he has always admitted that the boys are his, some legal minds question if it was even necessary for him to file the papers, but it is a responsible move for him to do so. He wants the children to have his last name, his money and all that his world entails. This also means that they will be legally eligible to inherit from Akon as well.

Akon’s full legal name is Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam, so if he is granted paternity rights, the little boys would bear the last name of Thiam.
